For decades a Black History Month Celebration has taken place at the “Shady Creek Church”. The celebration includes a presentation by Karen Hoshal, a life-time BCBHAS member and a descendant of the Alexander Family who were instrumental in building the 1st church, later rebuilt at its current location; and a selection of songs by the choir. The Shady Creek Church is now the Central Saanich United Church, 7180 E Saanich Rd, Saanichton, BC V8M 1Y4.
A church offering will take place during the service.
Coffee, tea and homemade baked goods are available after the service, by donation.
The Church was designated as a Municipal Heritage Property by the District of Central Saanich in the fall of 2023, and the plaque, presented to Karen, recognizes the Church as a heritage building. The Church was designated because it is of historic value for its use as a place of congregation and worship and for its association with the family of Charles and Nancy Alexander.
