BC Black History Awareness Society is incorporated

In 1993 a BC Black History Awareness committee was formed to address a request from the Royal BC Museum and Archives to the Black community in Victoria to stage a Black History Month event at the museum.  The success of that event was the catalyst for community members to form the BC Black History Awareness Society. The Society was incorporated on March 18,1994. Since March 2019 we have been a registered charity. Valin Marshall, one of the first Board members, is still an active member today. The first Board members were:

  • President: Clyde Griffith
  • Vice-President: Valin Marshall
  • Secretary: Jean Howell
  • Treasurer: Carl Thompson
  • Directors:  Jonathan Johnson, Tyrone Gaskin, Peggy Walker
