Our society was formed in February 1994 to celebrate achievements of black pioneers in British Columbia. We later expanded our goals to include creating greater awareness of the history of black people in B.C.; developing interests in promoting, educating and learning about B.C. black history; promoting diversity and inclusion throughout the community; bringing together diverse groups of people who have an interest in fulfilling these goals.
The society meets monthly from September to June. Our AGM is in September, business meetings are in September, November, January, March and May. In the other months; October, December, April and June we host educational and social events.
Each February we invite you to celebrate Black History Month with us. During that month we host and sponsor a wide variety of educational, social and entertaining events that appeal to a variety of audiences. Since 1998, the society continues to develop resources related to the history of Black pioneers, which are used by teachers, educators, students and amateur researchers. Explore our learning centre to find interesting and perhaps heretofore unknown people, places and events in B.C.s Black history.
If you are interested in joining our society, we are welcoming of new comers and would love to meet you!
